The German school system is very different from its American counterpart. Their system is divided into three types of schools that lead students toward a vocational or academic future. German students will attend what is called the Gymnasium. This is a nine-year secondary school that provides a comprehensive general education for students who wish to continue their studies at the university level. Only 30% of German students enter these prestigious schools.
School subjects are divided into three general categories: language, literature and art; the social sciences; and mathematics, science and technology. Students are required to take classes in each of these three categories. Typically subjects such as music, art and physical education, play a minor role in the school system, and students participate in these extra-curricular activities outside of school.
